History
The historical origins of this inhabited center date back to the Middle Ages, when an imposing castle was built in the current “pergola“, whose entrance could only be reached via a steep staircase, from the Latin “gradus” , from which, according to many testimonies, the name of the town derives. Today only a few traces remain of the ancient castle. The town as we see it today dates back to the 12th century when it was decided to recognize municipal autonomy for the first time (a period that did not last long since the village soon fell under the dominion of the city of state Orvieto). The most flourishing historical period for Gradoli was during the dominion of the ancient city of Castrocapitale of the homonymous duchy, created by the Farnese which ceased to exist in 1649. Even in more recent times Gradoli has been the protagonist of national news. In fact, this village was at the center of the investigation into the kidnapping of the president Aldo Moro from the Red Brigades.
