Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore

The cathedral of Santa Margherita is one of the symbolic buildings of the city of Montefiascone and is one of the most important churches in the province of Viterbo. The distinctive feature par excellence of this building is its dome inspired by that of St. Peter. The church was erected by Pope Pius XII in February 1943 which gave it the value of a minor basilica. Towards the end of the 1400s, however, Pope Urbino V established the diocese of Montefiascone which was completed a few times later, in 1671, however, work began on the construction of the dome, which was ruined by a terrible fire. The restoration work on the architectural work was entrusted to the master Carlo Fontana who attempted to restore the dome while keeping the original style intact. The works came to an end in December 1674 and since then the dome of the Basilica of Santa Margherita has become the distinctive emblem of the city. This work holds the third place in the ranking among the Italian domes in order of size. The structure reaches a diameter of 27 meters while in height it extends up to 23 meters. The basilica of Santa Margherita has within it an artistic treasure of immense value. In the cathedral are preserved the relics of Santa Margherita who suffered martyrdom in Antioco in 1200 and many frescoes made mostly from the fountain. Inside the church there is also a beautiful sanctuary of considerable historical and cultural interest. The basilica of Santa Margherita in Montefiascone is a real jewel where art and history blend beautifully, a very suggestive place that cannot be renounced to visit.
