Rocca dei Papi

Rocca dei Papi

The Rocca dei Papi is an ancient building that symbolizes the historical memory of Montefiascone in the province of Viterbo. The building or rather what remains of it overlooks the eastern shore of Lake Bolsena and has been the summer residence of countless Popes for centuries. Erected at the highest point of the village, the fortress dominates the whole lake and still today, albeit in ruins, makes a fine show of its complex and seductive structure. The complex originally corresponded to the typical architectural canons of the thirteenth century and had a trapezoidal plan with the corners occupied by massive stone watchtowers, of which only one remains visible today. The Rocca dei Papi in Montefiascone is the result of many interventions wanted by several popes such as the gallery, now lost, built by Leone X Medici with the contribution of the architect Antonio da Sangallo the Younger. Unfortunately the structure over the centuries has undergone a progressive abandonment until it fell into disrepair. Only at the end of the 1900s did the works for the restoration of this ancient building begin, which led to a redevelopment of the fortress. The site was open to public visits and the Museum of Architecture of Antonio da Sangallo the Younger, one of the art masters of the ancient Tuscia area, was created inside. The fortress of the Popes of Montefiascone not only represents a historical site of great value and importance both in terms of landscape and architecture, but the structure also contains within itself a cultural heritage that testifies to the importance that this enchanting country has covered in history.
