Torre dell'Orologio

Torre dell'Orologio

The clock tower, with its 21 meters high is one of the symbols of Marta in the province of Viterbo. Set in the historic center of the town, it dominates the town from above and watches over Lake Bolsena. Together with the houses facing piazza Castello, the clock tower is what remains of the ancient fortress. The inside of the tower can be accessed via an iron and peperino staircase located on the side of the pyramidal structure, which leads to the entrance on the south-facing facade. Here you will notice the presence of a particular marble bas-relief bearing the heraldic insignia of the noble Farnese family, while in a ceramic tile placed on the base of the tower there are some verses from Dante Alighieri’s paradise that speak of “malta” which according to the great poet was an ancient ecclesiastical prison. The date 1253 is also shown on the tower, but it is not possible to understand what this number refers precisely to, as the tower shows various styles that suggest that the structure has been more modified. Next to the tower there is a suggestive panoramic terrace that turns its gaze towards the two islands of Lake Martana and Bisentina, the latter by convention belongs to the nearby municipality of Capodimonte. Today there are no documents that allow us to trace the construction data of this beautiful monument, but what we do know is that in the Middle Ages Marta was the scene of innumerable turbulences that saw numerous lords alternate in the village. We do not know for sure which renovations and when they were carried out on the building over the centuries. The only historical reference to the Martha’s clock tower refers to a declaration of the Hannibals in the historical information of the Farnese house, in which it narrates that the tower was built with the stones of the destroyed Bisenzio under the pontificate of John XXII, but nothing ascertains the veracity of such statements. Today the tower has been restored and open to the public especially on weekends and village festivals, which are undoubtedly the best time to visit this beautiful town in the Lazio Maremma. in which he narrates that the tower was built with the stones of the destroyed Bisenzio under the pontificate of John XXII, but nothing confirms the veracity of these statements.
