La Barabbata

La Barabbata

LaBarabbata (Feast of the Madonna del Monte or delle Passate) is a particular event that involves the whole town of Marta and which culminates in two days of parades of costumed groups (men only) representing the various folk crafts of both land and lake. The highlight is May 14th. The party begins with a rally, attended by the whole town at 4.30 in the morning. The procession starts from the road that runs along the lake and reaches the small Sanctuary of the Madonna del Monte, where an ancient image of the Virgin is kept. The procession is mainly made up of a procession of wagons, conspicuously decorated, composed and led by representatives of the categories of casenghi, bifolchi, villani and fishermen.
Upon reaching the Church of the Madonna del Monte, thanks are given to the virgin for the products offered by the land and the lake: the participants, representatives of all categories, perform a particular rite. Three times they enter the church, walk down the aisle, kneel in thanksgiving to the Madonna. These three passes are the real highlight of the festival which in fact is called the “Festa delle Passate”.
