Civita Museum

Civita Museum

The Civita museum is one of the attractions of Grotte di Castro, the exhibition is housed in an elegant Renaissance building that bears the signature of Jacopo Barozzi da Vignola, an illustrious architect of the 16th century. It is an exhibition itinerary focused on the habits and customs of the Etruscan people, a journey through time in stages that marked the development of Grotte di Castro in relation to the main events of human history. The museum in particular focuses on the role played by the ancient city of Civita, an Etruscan center of considerable value, above all for its strategic position in the area between Lake Bolsena and the Fiora valley. The museum consists of many rooms, the first deals with the theme “male and female in the Etruscan world”, a journey into the cultural uses of this people through the study of the funeral objects found in the necropolis of Vigna la piazza and Centocamere. In the adjoining room, on the other hand, there is a faithful reproduction of a typical Etruscan cuisine inspired by the paintings of the Golino di Orvieto tomb from the first half of the 4th century BC. Among the most interesting rooms in the museum is the one called the “hall of power” in which the material recovered in 2010 in one of the graves of the necropolis of Vigna is exhibited. It is a faithful reproduction of a sumptuous funeral banquet, in which all the typical rituals of this popular culture are explained.
